Gellért Hill rises above the Danube on the Buda side, topped by the Citadella fortress and the Liberty Statue. It offers some of the best panoramic views of Budapest. Opening times and access rules change, so check official sources before you go.
What you will find
- The Citadella: a 19th-century fortress on the hilltop, now with a viewing terrace and exhibits.
- The Liberty Statue: a landmark visible from much of the city.
- Views: sweeping views over the Danube, the bridges and Pest. Sunset is a popular time to visit.
- The Gellért Baths at the foot of the hill. See the Gellért Baths guide.
How to get there
Walk up from the Gellért Hotel area or from the Elisabeth Bridge side by paved paths; the climb is steady but short. You can also reach the upper area by bus. Wear comfortable shoes. For ticket advice, see getting around Budapest.
Practical tips
- Allow about an hour for the walk and viewpoints, longer if you linger.
- Bring water on hot days.
- Paths can be dim after dark, so go in daylight or at sunset.
Pair it with a soak at the baths; read which bath to visit.
