The Danube Bend: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom

The Danube Bend (Dunakanyar), the stretch where the Danube curves sharply north to south just above Budapest, packs three distinct destinations into a single day: the artists’ village of Szentendre, the hilltop citadel of Visegrád, and the basilica town of Esztergom.

Szentendre

The closest of the three to Budapest (accessible by suburban HÉV train in about 45 minutes), Szentendre is a small riverside town with a Serbian Orthodox heritage, colourful Baroque architecture, and a long-standing artists’ colony dating from the early 20th century. The Skanzen open-air museum on the town’s outskirts reconstructs traditional Hungarian village architecture from across the country’s regions, one of the best open-air ethnographic museums in Central Europe. The compact old town, with its winding cobblestone streets and galleries, is walkable in a couple of hours.

Visegrád

Further north, Visegrád is dominated by its hilltop citadel, built in the 13th century and later a royal residence under King Matthias Corvinus, with sweeping views over the Danube’s bend below, arguably the best single view in the region. The ruins of the Royal Palace in the town below hint at what was once one of medieval Europe’s most opulent courts.

Esztergom

Esztergom, on the border with Slovakia, is Hungary’s ecclesiastical capital and the birthplace of King Stephen I, Hungary’s first king and patron saint. Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, dominates the skyline from its hilltop position above the river; the dome’s gallery offers panoramic views into Slovakia across the Danube. Below the basilica, the Castle Museum covers the site’s medieval royal history.

Getting There

The three towns can be combined by car in a single day, or reached individually by train, bus, or seasonal riverboat from Budapest. Without a car, doing all three comfortably in one day is tight; many visitors prioritise Szentendre and Visegrád, or Visegrád and Esztergom, rather than attempting all three.
