Where to stay in Budapest depends mostly on which side of the Danube, and which specific district, matches how you plan to spend your time. The short version: stay in Pest for nightlife and walkability, stay in Buda for quiet and views.
District V: The Inner City
Budapest’s most central and most expensive district, covering the area around Váci utca, Deák Ferenc tér, and the Parliament. Walking distance to most major sights, dense with restaurants and hotels of every category, and correspondingly the most tourist-facing and highest-priced part of the city. The right choice for a first-time visitor who wants everything within easy reach and doesn’t mind paying a premium for it.
District VI and VII: Terézváros and Erzsébetváros
Immediately northeast of District V, covering Andrássy út’s lower stretch and the Jewish Quarter and ruin bar district. This is the best base for visitors prioritising nightlife and a younger, more local-feeling atmosphere, with a wide range of boutique hotels and apartment rentals, generally cheaper than District V while remaining a 15 to 20 minute walk from the main sights.
District IX: Ferencváros
South of the centre, along the Danube near the Central Market Hall. Rapidly gentrifying over the past several years, with a growing independent restaurant and bar scene and noticeably lower prices than the inner districts. Good value for visitors comfortable being a short tram ride rather than a walk from the main sights.
Buda: I and XII Districts
The Castle District (District I) offers historic character and some of the best views in the city, at hotel prices that reflect the setting; it is quieter at night and less convenient for late dining or nightlife. The XII district in the Buda hills further out is genuinely residential and scenic, best suited to visitors prioritising quiet and green space over central convenience.
Practical Recommendation
For a first visit of 3 to 5 days: District V or VI/VII gives the best balance of convenience and character. For a return visit or a longer stay: consider Ferencváros for value, or the Castle District for atmosphere if budget allows.
