Margaret Island (Margitsziget) is a long, green island in the Danube between Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge. It is Budapest’s most popular city park, with walking and running paths, gardens, ruins and sports facilities. Opening hours, vehicle rules and attractions can change, so check official sources before you go.
What to see and do
- Walk or jog the loop: a path runs around the island’s edge, with river views and plenty of shade.
- Japanese Garden: a small landscaped garden with a pond.
- Water tower and ruins: medieval convent ruins and a landmark tower sit among the trees.
- Musical Fountain: a fountain that runs choreographed shows in warmer months. Check the season and schedule.
- Rent a bike or pedal cart: popular, especially with families, and available from rental points on the island.
Swimming and spa
The island has pools and a spa hotel complex. Check current opening times and ticket rules directly with each venue.
Getting there
Take tram 4 or 6 to Margaret Bridge, or bus routes that stop at the island. Cars are generally restricted on the island. See getting around Budapest for ticket advice.
Practical tips
- Go early for quiet paths, or in the evening for sunset.
- Bring water and sun protection in summer.
- Combine it with the Parliament or a stroll along the Danube.
