Budapest Public Transport Tickets and the Budapest Card

Budapest’s public transport is easy to use, but ticket rules catch many visitors out because inspectors check them. Fares and products change, so always check the official transport operator’s site for current options before you buy.

Ticket types

  • Single tickets: good for occasional trips. Some tickets must be validated before use; read the instructions on the ticket or machine.
  • Time-based passes: 24-hour, 72-hour and similar travel passes suit visitors who will ride often.
  • Contactless or app ticketing: available in some cases. Confirm the current options and where they are accepted.

Tips to avoid fines

  • Validate or activate your ticket as required.
  • Keep your ticket until the end of the journey.
  • Be wary of anyone offering to sell you tickets informally.

The Budapest Card

The Budapest Card is a tourist pass that bundles transport with discounts or entries to some attractions. It is only worth it if you will use many of the included sights and transport. Compare what is included, its current price and the duration against your plans before buying.

From the airport

An express bus and other options connect the airport to the center. See flights to Budapest and getting around Budapest.
