Hungary Visa and Entry Requirements

Hungary is a Schengen Area member, so entry requirements depend mainly on whether you’re arriving from within or outside the Schengen zone, and on your nationality.

EU and Schengen Citizens

EU and Schengen Area citizens can enter Hungary freely with just a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa or time limit on their stay.

Visa-Exempt Nationalities

Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries can enter Hungary and the wider Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, for tourism or business purposes, with a passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date. This 90-day limit counts across the entire Schengen Area, not per country, so time spent in other Schengen countries counts against the same allowance.

ETIAS

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a planned low-cost online pre-authorisation for visa-exempt travellers to the Schengen Area, similar to the US ESTA. It is not yet in operation. The EU had aimed for the last quarter of 2026 but has dropped that target and set no new date (reports point to 2027). No applications are open, so nothing is needed now. Check the official EU travel pages for the current status, and apply only through the official EU channel once it opens, not through third-party sites that charge extra. The EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which registers non-EU travellers’ biometrics at the border, began a phased rollout in October 2025 and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so allow extra time at passport control.

Longer Stays

Visitors wanting to stay beyond 90 days, for work, study, or long-term relocation, need a Hungarian national visa or residence permit, arranged through a Hungarian embassy or consulate in advance. This includes the White Card residence permit for remote workers, covered in the digital nomad guide.

Documents to Carry

Carry your passport (or EU ID card) at all times; Hungarian police can request identification. Travel insurance is not a formal entry requirement for most visa-exempt visitors but is strongly recommended given Hungary’s healthcare system charges non-EU visitors directly for treatment.
