Budapest Districts Explained: Where to Stay and Explore

Budapest is divided into 23 numbered districts, written in Roman numerals. Visitors mostly deal with a handful in the center. Knowing what each is like makes it easier to choose where to stay and where to spend your evenings. Always check current conditions and recent reviews before you book.

The central districts

District I (Castle District): Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. Quiet and scenic, but with fewer restaurants and nightlife options. See the Buda Castle guide.

District V (Belváros-Lipótváros): The downtown core on the Pest side, home to the Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica and the riverside promenade. Convenient but busy with visitors, and often more expensive.

District VI (Terézváros): Andrássy út, the Opera House and a growing café and restaurant scene. A good balance of central and relaxed. See Andrássy út.

District VII (Erzsébetváros): The Jewish Quarter and the heart of the ruin bar scene. Lively late into the night, so noise can matter if you are choosing a place to sleep. See the Jewish Quarter guide and ruin bars.

District VIII (Józsefváros): Mixed and changing, with university areas and some creative spots. Some streets are rougher than others, so check the exact address.

District IX (Ferencváros): Home to the Central Market Hall and a growing food and bar scene around Ráday utca. See the Central Market Hall guide.

Other areas worth knowing

  • District XI (Újbuda): south Buda, with Gellért Hill and the university area. See Gellért Hill.
  • District XIII (Újlipótváros): a calm residential area by the river, popular with long-term residents.
  • District II: green hillside neighborhoods in Buda, close to Rózsadomb and the thermal baths at Lukács.

Choosing a base

  • First visit: districts V, VI or VII for walkability.
  • Quiet nights: districts I, II or XIII.
  • Nightlife: district VII, with earplugs as a sensible precaution.
